Response To Text 1 – ‘The A Team’ by Ed Sheeran (Song)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KlOodL9Gw4

This song is heartbreaking and saddening to me for a number of reasons.

Written and performed by an internationally famous singer-songwriter, stereotypically you would expect them to be rich, famous and living the high life, not engaging in stories or matters like this.

It also isn’t the typical ‘love’ song, although it does focus on sexual relationships, terrible loss and drug addictions.

This makes me feel heartbroken, the people around her have let the issue get this server and now are saying she is a lost cause with no hope. The person behind this song, ‘Angle’, has become heavily addicted to drugs and is a prostitute in order to make money. “And they say she’s in the Class A Team.” They, the people she is around and the “A Team” is a reference to people who are to far gone in their addiction to be saved. Are the people around her just the same? Isn’t there something more we can do to help these people?

I feel so much sympathy for ‘Angle’, I wish she could have had a better life, that things could have gone differently. This song is a brutal description of reality for a lot of people “tried to swim and stay afloat,” who have fallen into this hole, trying their hardest to get out. The repeated chorus line of “It’s too cold outside for Angles to fly.” emphasises that despite her being an “angel” she is unable to fly outside because she is constantly being judged by the cold society she lives in. The line is a metaphor. it’s too cold outside is not referring to temperature but rather a cold society. It makes me feel so much hatred toward the society we live in. Why do humans feel the need to judge others? Why isn’t it enough to be content and happy with our own lives and not worry about others? The writer, Ed Sheeran, has successfully raised these questions and issues in my head. I feel to need to do something about the problem and make a change. In my opinion, people need to be given more one on one support. While there are systems in place people don’t use them because they are to scared. Friends and family need to step up and get help for their loved ones.

This song has changed my personal view on drug addictions. Originally believing that is individuals are going to be stupid enough to do drugs the effects are their own problem. However, I came to realise that it isn’t always curiosity that leads people to drugs, possibly a bad upbringing or external pressure and stress of life. “Closed eyes hoping for a better life.” shows the audience she doesn’t want this life, she keeps dreaming of a better life (closed eyes) and wishing that she didn’t have to make money the way she did and that she had never got addicted to cocaine.

I felt terribly sad for the death of ‘Angle’ “for Angles to die,” the main character. The internationally recommitted popular modern songs have the power to change people’s viewpoints. ‘The A Team’ peaked at number three on the New Zealand charts and has been certified platinum by Recording Industry Association of New Zealand for sales of 15,000 copies. This song received a lot of recognition nationally and internationally, it has the potential to change the wider communities opinion on drug addictions and the effects. However, I feel there is still a valuable message in the story of this girl. I would recommend it to the year 12 book club as the message the lyrics carry an important lesson which all teenagers should understand. It is a catchy song with a good tune which I believe they will enjoy

Response To Text 2 – ‘One Girl One Dream’ by Laura Dekker (Novel)

It is not common for me to so wholeheartedly relate to an author’s portrayal of themselves. One Girl One Dream, the story of Laura Dekker’s solo circumnavigation of the world, made me feel so much admiration for her achievements. To be honest, it left me wishing I could also achieve such outrageous things. While Laura’s dream and decision to circumnavigate the globe at the age of 15 was controversial. I believe that her case is truly an exception to societies ‘rules’. She was more than capable and had the skills and knowledge needed, along with the passion and desire. I admired her bravery and courage, “At sea I feel comfortable and I come to rest.” it made me want to be more outgoing and adventurous that I already am.

It made me so angry that the Holland government tried to hold her back from accomplishing amazing things in life. The poor girl just wanted to live her dream but instead was living in fear. “I was constantly afraid that Youth Care would lock me up.” this makes me fell as though she has had all rights and freedom taken way. She may have been very young at the time, but did the government take the time to get to know her? To fully understand her case? Once learning about her skills and talent her age may not have seemed like such a big deal. It disheartened me that she was put through such troubles. While Laura was determined and persistent, it saddens me the way children dreams can be killed in the way society views them. All it takes is one person to mention how unachievable or silly it is for them to lose sight and give up, potentially missing out on great things. I’m extremely glad Laura didn’t give up, she managed to prove a very powerful point, age and gender doesn’t matter.

I felt a lot of admiration for Laura and her achievements. Her willingness to learn “I want simply to learn about the world and live freely.” and courageousness to explore inspires me. The theme of adventure in Laura’s story is very relatable to me. I had decided to read this book purely based on the fact that I too enjoy sailing. While her passion may be stronger our interests are similar which made this book an easy and delightful read. From what I have learnt in this text I feel adventures similar to this would feed my hunger to explore and try new things. While I may not be as courageous as Laura at this moment in time, her story has taught me a new way of living and seeing the world.

To say, I enjoyed this book would be an understatement. I felt as though it was me taking on the world alone at 15. Some may question why she had to go at such a young age. But in my opinion there was no better time for Laura to start her life. I would recommend this to the younger audiences as well as the year 12 book club due to it being written about a fifteen-year-old. One Girl One Dream would be a great read for anyone who enjoys adventure and learning about the world we live in. It holds a lot of inspiration that younger people may need and thrive from in their lives. I know it gave me the motivation to start sailing again.

Response To Text 3 – ‘The Help’ by Kathryn Stockett (Novel)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1454029/

Never before have I felt so much sorrow during a novel. The Help is based around the stories of the coloured cleaning woman who have been mistreated during the 1960’s. As a whole the book made me feel very depressed. While it also contains humour and happiness, which softens the harshness of the tragedy, the theme of racism is still very obvious.

I don’t believe I have ever felt so much hatred towards a character. Hilly Holbrook treats blacks in horrible ways, referring to Minny as ‘that nigger Minny’. While using that word back in those days was normal, my hate toward that word grew immensely throughout this story, I believe it’s worse that the majority of profanities in the world because of its derogatory nature. It should never have been created in the beginning. The theme of racism is relevant to me as I live in a multi-culture society, surrounded by individuals from all over the world. “Niggers,” said by Holbrook is a word people use around me daily. While it often isn’t used with the intent of it being hurtful I believe it’s an issue which people need to take greater care around.

I disagree strongly with the way Hilly Holbrook treated the lives of African people. Holbrook is terribly nasty towards all black people. In particular Minny Jackson, I was sympathetic towards her and felt I was experiencing the pain and trauma of being a black woman living in these times. I felt this emotion during the part when Minny goes back to ‘apologise’ to Holbrook. Upon opening the door, Holbrook says, “so, nobody wanted to hire a sass mouthin’ thievin’ Negro? Did they?” This is extremely disrespectful, from hearing this I learnt how very little consideration and respect the majority of white people had towards the blacks. Offering Holbrook the pie in order to say ‘sorry’, Minny ignores the nasty comments. “Pie is as good as always, Minny,” states Holbrook. Minny’s composure makes me feel a sense of hope as she stands up for herself, finally getting one back on Holbrook. “Eat my shit!” Minny had put her shit in the pie. This gives me a great sense of accomplishment for Minny. It is humorous creating small giggles within the dark tension throughout the novel. What kind of a person treats another person with such disrespect and rudeness, knowing very well that they are already receiving better in life? I believe it is because she is lost in the expectations of society at the time. These are the kind of questions the writer wanted to raise throughout the book. They wanted people to experience what it was like back in these times to gain a true understanding of the things people suffered through.

It also saddened me that someone with everything they need in life and every reason to help others should have to go out of their way to make people’s lives hell. I wonder if it brings them happiness? Why did society treat black in such an appalling way? The may have different coloured skin but in my opinion everyone is the same on the inside. Everyone should be treated the same. The theme within this novel brought these questions to mind. It opened my eyes towards the harshness of racism and I came to admire the blacks rather than feel sorry for them.

The book made me feel very annoyed, events like the ones highlighted in the novel still happen today. Times haven’t changed more than 100 blacks were killed unarmed in 2014. Racism is still an issue which makes me feel angry and annoyed that people have not released the pain caused and mistakes they are making. I feel this novel gives a great message that shouldn’t go unnoticed. I would recommend it to the year 12’s book club as it is an intriguing film which evokes sorrow and sadness and will keep their attention. I would also recommend this to year 12 and older audiences who are able to spare a tear or two or are not satisfied with the standard fantasy or happy endings.

Response To Text 4 – ‘Man In The Mirror’ by Michael Jackson (Song)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5vz6iwV38U

Never before has a song inspired me so much. Man In The Mirror, performed by Michael Jackson, ‘The King of Pop’, made me feel extremely outstanding. The song is about realising that the change has to start with you. I agreed strongly with the theme and lyrics of the song. The theme is very relatable to many people. Relating to me especially I felt that the message of change beginning with yourself was instrumental in how I have gotten this far in things such as sport and school. After changing the way I did things, dramatic changes began to occur elsewhere. The effect of this motivation “It’s gonna feel real good.” mentioned in the song is relatable as I began to feel happier.

I have never felt so much control over my future before. The lyrics are empowering “if you wanna make the world a better place.” and have changed my personal view on the ways of society. The world is never going to be a better place for me unless I make the change. Originally I was too focused on the bigger picture and not taking small steps towards achieving my goal. This song has changed my personal opinion. I now see things in a different light with has positively influenced my life. It makes me felt miserable that so many people are “pretending not to see,” the needs of the children suffering. Why do people ignore issues that are right in front of them? Jackson has successfully raised questions in listeners heads that are going to make them take another look at how they treat others in need. He made a start towards making the world a better place and for that I admire him.

I felt a lot of admiration for Michael Jackson raising some of the big issues in our world. The main one being, “I see the kids in the street, with not enough to eat.” child hunger. Jackson did things like this throughout a lot of his songs and is extremely smart for doing so. The theme of change links perfectly to a major issue in an especially popular pop song performed by a very famous singer still known internationally. I admire Jackson for using his public image to raise important issues within society. Statistics shows that 40,000 New Zealand kids are fed by charities. I believe this could be a result of the issue being raise in 1987 by Michael Jackson and continually since then in all other forms of media. By reinforcing the issue, people have become more aware and willing to help. It makes me extremely happy that 40,000 of kids living in my country are now not going hungry.

The song was a roller coaster of emotions I felt everything; inspired, control, miserable and admiration. Even though this song was released many years ago and Michael Jackson has since passed, his music is still noticed today. I believe that his art has played a part in the shaping of our society, helping to open people’s eyes and realise what is wrong with or the world. Jackson offered a starting point for listeners, start with ‘The Man In The Mirror’ this is a clear message that all people can follow if they try hard enough. He had hope that this would lead to bigger and better things that could one day help our world as a whole. I feel that this song has an amazing message that everyone should hear and understand. I would recommend it to the year 12 book club and all other young people as these people are the future generation that will be running our world. If they feel can feel as inspired and motivated as I did then maybe we can make the world can be a better place.

Response To Text 5 – ‘The Blind Side’ directed by John Lee Hancock (Film)

In the film, I was deeply sympathetic towards Michael Ores journey. It made me reflect on the effects of people living in poverty in a first world society. The film shows an extraordinary contrast between the two scales of different classes of living. Michaels reaction to his room “It’s nice, I never had one before.” shocks not only Leigh-Anne Tuohy but me as well. As I learnt more about Michael I began to see how he lacked an environment in which he could develop to his full potential and lead a productive life. With Michael’s amazing talent it makes me wonder how may other talented kids are stuck is similar bad places. Is there something more we could be doing? In my opinion, New Zealand, for example, could be putting the $25.7 million towards helping our kids in need creating a better generation, not a new flag.

The theme of kindness evident throughout the film was heartwarming making me feel extremely happy. The Tuohy family displays an enormous amount of kindness towards Michael Ore. Tuohy’s were kind people, they took an impoverished, poor student under their wing, giving him all the benefits their children got growing up in a wealthy family. It is heartwarming to know that there are still good people in our world. The consequences of their actions were nothing but positive for Michael. “You’re changing that boy’s life,” they gave him the chance to be the best he could be. It has given me the need to go out and help someone in need, even just to make them happy for a small amount of time. The actions of this family are inspirational and something to look up to. This film has changed my views towards rich people. While it is stereotypic for rich people to be selfish, living the high life without a care for others below them. The Tuohy family has shown me I was wrong, there are still people willing to share and help others, which make me very happy.

Despite this happiness, it made me angry the way Leigh-Anne Tuohy’s friends reacted to her kindness. They became worried and concerned without having even met the boy. I was disgusted in the way they jumped to conclusions “I mean, she’s a beautiful white girl, and he’s a big, black boy.” based on stereotypes. Having learnt about Michael and his personality I was surprised someone could think that of him. Leigh-Anne’s response “shame on you,” was exactly my thoughts. Personally I found Leigh-Anne a very relatable character while I have never done anything as outgoing and kind, I enjoy helping others in order to make them happy. I feel this is why I engaged and found the film so interesting.

However I also felt joy watching this film, the humour was heartwarming and enjoyable to watch. It offers clear messages about kindness, perseverance and overcoming obstacles. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed this film as it was relatable and heartwarming. I would defiantly recommend it the to year 12 book club and people who are satisfied with happy endings. It teaches good kindhearted lessons and reinforces positive societal attitudes.

Response To Text 6 – ‘Life of Pi’ by Yann Martel (Novel)

I felt so much respect for Pi’s positivity, I idolised him. The Life of Pi is a very compelling story of the survival of Piscine Molitor ‘Pi’. The narrative structure used made the book much more realistic and believable, catching my attention and keeping me interested. I found it interesting how the author, Yann Martel decided to swap between the perspective of Pi and Yann Martel, himself.

Religion is a big aspect of this of this novel. Pi’s decision to follow three different religions is something that surprised me. The religions, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are the major religions across India. I also found it interesting as it is often uncommon for individuals to follow more than one religion. Pi’s view on his religions “I challenge anyone to understand Islam, its spirit, and not to love it.” is something I agree with. I believe that religion is meant to be discovered with-in, something you personally agree with. The people within our society today should understand this. We are feed so much information and material today that negatively influences our personal beliefs. People no longer have true personal beliefs without upbringing, media or society influencing them. I feel finding who you are as an individual and what you truly believe in is an extremely important step in life, something I am currently trying to achieve.

I was shocked and felt so much horror throughout this novel. Pi fears he will be next after the Hyena kills and eats both the Zebra and Orangutang, but still manages to keep his cool and stay positive. The animals are actually symbols for people, this shocked me the most. Interviewers did not believe Pi’s real story so he told them an alternative version using animals instead of people. I saw the book in a completely different light, it help me to really understand that “life will defend itself no matter how small it is.” I was disgusted that humans would act like this. However given the situation it makes me wonder if it could be justified or not. It has shown me that people really will do anything is order to save themselves, without any consideration for others. I felt so angry that we try so hard to separate ourselves from animals, thinking we are more civilised and intelligent, yet situations like this make us do things we could never think of. It raises the question in my head, what would I do if faced with the unthinkable? I don’t believe I could handle as well as Pi did.

I felt so much sadness for Pi’s experiences. For him to go through such a tragedy and dehumanising event it makes sense to compare the humans directly to animals. Telling the story using animals instead of humans ironically made it more human. The cannibalism in this story is similar to the story of the 1972 Andes plane crash. While The Life of Pi still shocks me that a human could kill another for their own benefit. When faced with a life-threatening situation the survivors of the crash were faced with the decision of whether or not to eat the dead. Society viewed it very much the same way. People didn’t believe Pi’s story, think it was crazy and unthinkable. While the survivors of the crash were told to keep quiet in worry of been dramatically judged. While cannibalism is disgusting and should not happen, I believe there have been situations in the past where it can be justified, The Life of Pi not being one.

The story of the Life of Pi left me feeling surprised and astounded by his survival. It is a very worthwhile read, with a lot of hidden life lessons to be learnt. It offers tense situations, tragedy and happiness. While an older audience is better able to fully understand the meaning behind Yann Martel’s words, I would still recommend it to the year 12 book club. It is a book I believe they will enjoy and be able to learn from.

Creative Writing – Losing a Friend Hurts

CREATIVE WRITING

Text Idea: Emma and her best friend Alanah were in a tragic car crash with kills Alanah. Emma is left without her best friend. She finds it hard to cope with the tricks her own mind is playing on her.

Text Type: Creative Writing

Purpose: To draw emotion from the reader around the events and characters.

Title: Losing a Friend Hurts

Losing a Friend Hurts

I lie here in the hospital bed, it’s just Alanah and me. Running, swimming, cycling, skating. Laughing, playing, messing about together, ever since forever began. Except forever’s finished. Alanah’s not here anymore. It’s just me.

I’m in a timeless zone where a swirling darkness fiercely pulls me this way and that. All I am left with are shadows of Alanah running circles in my mind and crisp white patches plastered over my injured eyes. This morning a car accident killed my best friend and left me here to listen painfully as the deafening ring of the hospital, buzzes around my head leaving me no space to cry.

All I remember is my face cut and bleeding. Whispers would slice into my brain like a sharp silver knife. Glass sparkled while lying scattered over the ground. Long pale shards violently ripped the sun’s light away from me. The blood dripped from my eyes, sliding through my fingers, as Alanah lifelessly slumped beside me.

I effortlessly swim in the darkness of my head. Alanah’s laughter an echo. Long slow strokes, the water is warm. It tastes like salty tears. You can’t catch me. Emma can’t catch a flea. The sound of Alanah’s voice floats me to the surface, I feel my eyes still covered and a row of rough, neat stitches down one side of my face.

“Emma, are you awake?” Inside I feel broken, bruised and battered. I don’t want to talk.

“Emma.” The softness of Mum’s voice, her gentle hands, and the sweet smell of her rose perfume brings me out of the danger of my own mind.

“She’s dead, isn’t she?” I asked.

No reply. Every time I asked about Alanah, no one tells me the truth. They would tell me how bits of glass had been taken from my eyes. Dad had told me they’d caught the person who caused the accident.

“Isn’t she?”  Apart of me already knows the answer. I just need to hear it said out loud. So that it could fully sink in.

“Mum? Dad?” Inside I want to scream. I want to be as far away from here as possible. Far from reality. Somewhere I can see Alanah.

“Yes,” Dad’s voice cut through the deathly silence.

You will never catch me, Emma. She can’t be dead, she’s right there. I can hear her voice and see her smiling face.

I feel myself rapidly slip into the darkness of my own mind again. I am no longer there. The voices in the room whisper as though they are shadows lost in the night, coming and going. Who are you, Emma? Where have you gone? You are lost.

A tight uncomfortable feeling of loneliness hit me that night as I lay alone in my unbearable hospital bed. The overwhelming sense of a horrific emptiness hung around me like a bad smell, leaving me feeling alone and confused. I was powerless. I had lost my best friend, someone I loved. Now I began to lose myself within my own mind.

Formal Writing – Euthanasia

Text Idea: The discussion of euthanasia. Why should it be illegal?

Text Type: Formal Writing

Purpose: To inform the reader how euthanasia and how it could be a good option for some people suffering through terminal illnesses.

Title: Euthanasia

Euthanasia

Euthanasia is a subject typically avoided by most people. It is a subject known to have two very distinct sides. Euthanasia is the termination of a very sick person’s life in order to relieve them of their suffering. Many argue that we do possess the right to end our own lives, however watching loved ones suffer is distressing and dying by choice is a very personal decision. Consider yourself diagnosed with a terminal illness, possibly painfully suffering towards the end of your life, this would be a source of distress the people closest to you while making you miserable. Who would want to put their loved ones and themselves through that? Why allow the pain to continue? Life is meant to be enjoyable, not something that must go on even if it brings the worst pain to you and those closest to you. Why do we prolong the suffering of those who can not get better?

Death and euthanasia should not be compared. Death is inevitable, not a choice when someone is terminally ill. Euthanasia is a choice some may opt to take, to end the pain. Those that would consider euthanasia want to end the suffering. They would rather die peacefully rather than have another few tragic days unable to properly live life. Is it not rather selfish of us to deny someone peace while we watch them in agony? These people will not get relief from this pain they are put through.

The majority of arguments are opposed to euthanasia, they claim that humans do not have the right to end another human life. It is often said that it eliminates the chance for an individual to recover, shortening their life. However acts of man kill thousands of animals each day, ranging from unconsidered slaughter to forceful euthanasia. Generally those patients that would consider euthanasia want to end the suffering caused by a fatal terminal illness. All evident points are inferred towards death, it is not possible for the ill patient to simply recover. Countries that euthanasia is legal in have strict requirements and rules regarding the patients’ physical wellbeing and state of mind for if the patient requests euthanasia. It would not be possible for someone with the flu to be euthanised, only those who have no chance of recovery. It is often argued that patients being euthanised could have gone on to live for another year or so. This is not likely the case as in 1991, a Dutch report on euthanasia showed that 86 percent of cases, euthanasia only shortened lives by a maximum of a week, often only a few hours. This shows that euthanasia would not be a legal suicide, but an escape from unbearable agony for patients instead of enduring this pain for another few days.

We are all individuals, our decision to control our own death is a very personal. Why should people be forced to suffer through the most painful and miserable parts of their life? Your own death should not be determined by the government. Terminally ill patients are being stripped away from their freedom of choice, just to extend their life by a possible few days. What I believe is that your life is your own, from the day you were born to the day you pass on. You are the person who could be in critical condition, simply holding up while the agony deteriorates. Why prolong the life of one in agony who recognises their perishability and consents to be euthanised? This suffering is not only affecting the patient but their family and friends as well. There is nothing they can do but watch their loved one slowly deteriorate. It is common for people to suffer from pain towards the end of their lives. However in extreme cases patients should be allowed to request euthanasia. The majority of us in this position would prefer to end the pain, however, this is hard to do ourselves. Instead, we must agonise until such time as we pass.

Watching someone you love, sick beyond help is traumatic. At the point when individuals consider euthanasia they only appraise the torment and wellbeing of the patient. However, the friends and families of those suffering are affected as well. Recently Lecretia Seales a brain cancer patient has been in the news. She wanted to be able to choose to die at a time and manner of her own choosing, with the assistance of a physician. Euthanasia would have eased the suffering of family member’s. Lecretia’s brain cancer growth was unpredictable, there was a large risk she would suffer before she died under conditions unbearable to her. She had a condition which prevented her ability to live at home and took away her quality of life. Instead of been heavily medicated, continuing to rapidly decline in health she wanted to be granted the choice to be euthanised in her own home surrounded her family. Her family would not have to witness her decline, suffer with her through her pain. In their mind’s they would always be able to see her as a brave, strong woman. Shown in a recent case study the average percent of terminally ill patients, who will die in pain is 55%. Would you like these odds if it was you or a loved one in the same situation?Euthanasia D right or wrong answer, it is strongly opinionated, a topic which should be fully discussed. It should be seen as a symbol of choice rather than a legal suicide, we should honour their last choice to end the incurable pain. After all, we claim the entitlement to end an animal’s life without the slightest hesitation. Why do we abstain from the thought of giving individuals at death’s door a simpler passing, relieving them from the pain and suffering surrounded by friends and family? We all realise that diminishing in agony is something very real for some individuals, why are we extending this torment?

Euthanasia does not have a right or wrong answer, it is purely based on individual opinion, a topic which should be fully discussed. Alive Essay

Analyse how settings are used to help you understand characters in the written text(s).

The non-fiction novel, Alive, written by Paul Piers Read uses setting to help the reader to understand the characters and how they developed through the text. The main setting is where the Fairchild crashed. This was into an abandoned area of the Andes between Chile and Argentina. Every aspect of the setting these individuals were placed in proposed a life treating risk. The most obvious problems that are faced are the extreme cold, lack of food and how they are going to get out. The way in which the individuals deal with these conditions and obstacles is how the reader is able to understand each character.

The most immediate threat to the survivors of the crash was the extreme cold. This setting was near impossible to survive in with the researches available to them at the crash site. They had only what had landed around them in the crash there natural surroundings was just snow. The was in which they handled the cold helped the reader to better understand the characters. The extremely low temperatures in the Andes made “…their limbs numb with cold…”. The cold temperatures showed the reader the best and the worst in the each individual as the cold surrounded them day in day out. We were able to see how strong willed and determined individuals were. Canessa’s idea to remove the seat coverings and use them as a form of blanket, showed us that Canessa hadn’t given up an was set on finding ways to survive. Other ideas that helped the group to overcome the cold temperatures as much as possible included barricading the opening in the back of the plane which played a large part in saving the characters from death and showing the reader that despite there situation these individuals were not going to give up. Not all individuals showed a positive and helpful side to themselves when put in this position. Whether is was because of injury or self-pity Senora Mariana showed how weak he really was, there was no determination to survived and gave up on life, doing nothing to help themselves.

The next problem they faced due to the setting was the lack of food. Food is one of the most important aspects of survival. The surroundings at the crash site didn’t offer any fresh vegetation or animals as they were completely surrounded by snow. The way in which the characters dealt with this helped the reader to better understand the characters. The survivors had nearly enough food for the time being, as there time on the mountain got longer the daily rations of “…a deodorant cap filled with wine…a taste of jam…. and a square of chocolate…” were no where near the amount of energy need to survive the cold alone. While this rationing was showing survival skills and logic it wasn’t going to keep people alive. Parrado showed his determination to survive when he was brave enough to suggest eating human flesh. He was backed up by Canessa when he justified to the group that “It is meat…The souls have left their bodies and are in heaven with God”. Canessa was the natural leader of the group, while the others still considered the idea foul he “cut away twenty slivers the size of matchsticks” and placed the meat out to dry on the top of the Fairchild before finally mustering up the courage to swallow his firs piece of human flesh. This act over came there immediate issue of lack of food. The courage shown by Canessa when he ate the first piece helped the reader to understand that he was doing everything and anything need to survive.

Paragraph 3 decided to rewrite it

In conclusion the setting of the novel, Alive by Piers Paul Read, helped to show the reader what each character is like. The obstacles they faced brought out good qualities such as leadership, ability to change and determination. It also brought out bad qualities such as the ability to give up so easily and impatience. The harsh setting of the Andes is something I haven’t experienced which made it ear impossible to understand the pain the conditions would have made each individual feel. However the way the writer clearly described each aspect in such detail made it easier to sympathies with the characters on an emotional level.

Letter D

Hi Liz, thank you for your letter, I hope I am able to help you solve the problem you are facing in your life. I hope you will be able to make a positive decision that will help you in the near and distant future. First off I would like to say don’t listen to people at your school. The people who choose to pick on you will generally not understand your situation and are just out looking for attention. Orewa College promotes a practice called Manaki Orewa, which is set up to promote positive attitudes and behaviours towards people in the school and wider community. This was set up to help ensure that students had respect for themselves, respect for others and respect for the environment. The few students who are giving you a hard time at school are clearly lacking in respect for others, been yourself. I would suggest you talk to a teacher/dean at the school who may be able to remind the students about Manaki, and hopefully put an end to the problem. It’s important that this is solved not only for your self esteem and to make life more comfortable for you but, The Human Rights Act 1993 makes it unlawful to discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against a person on the grounds of their sexual orientation. Meaning both your mums and you have the right to be treated the same as any other person, no matter what there sexual orientation. Also everybody else has the responsibility to respect you for you. There are also several good support strategies that will be able to help you over come your issue. These been school based councillors, family planning, rape crisis just to name a few. I would highly recommend starting at your school based councillors, there they will be able talk through your problems, offer advice, and direct you down the right path. Family Planning is also a very good place to go for support. They promote a positive view of sexuality and will also be able to provide information and advice to you so you can make informed choices about your sexual and reproductive health and well-being. With Manaki and by using these support strategies you will be able to enhance your well-being. Your spiritual Hauora will change as by taking the initiative and getting your self help, you will know that in the future you will be able to do what is right for your well-being. Mental and emotional Hauroa that you hold will also be enhanced by seeking help from others in your community, as they will be there for you to offer advice and knowledge to keep your feelings and mind in a safe and healthy state. Your social Hauora will also be dramatically improve because by talking thing through with someone you will be able to hopefully come to the conclusion on how to positively react to the students giving you a hard time at school. This will hopefully help sort out your issue. Finally your physical Hauora it will also enhance as by going to see a councillor you will feel more comfortable been yourself. I hope that this has been helpful to you and that you will now be able to seek help form a support strategy. If you have further problem don’t hesitate to send me another letter! All the best for the future, I hope you have a positive out come.

Having a positive attitude about your sexual orientation and identity is difficult. Learning who you are is hard because there is so many influences around you. Through out the year there has become more pressure on teenagers to be ‘perfect’ and ‘normal’ because of the expectation shown by the media. The subject of sexual orientation is becoming more and more relevant as counties such as our own, New Zealand introduce legalising gay marriage. Sexual orientation effect teenage the most as they are still learnt who they are and where they fit in, in society. An individual should have the right to choose there own identity with out pressure from other factors. You should be allowed to be who you want. However not everyone respects other people’s personal choices, also some people need help working who they are while staying in a positive light. This is where support strategies come in. Manaki Orewa is a practice set up to promote respect for the people around you, yourself and the environment. Also counselling, which is offer to people of all ages, it there to give you someone to turn and someone to talk to. Family Planning and Rainbow Youth are two very good counselling services open to the public. Rainbow youth is a charitable organisation dedicated to help out people between the ages of 13-28 years old that may not be heterosexual. It is a drop-in centre that is open Monday to Friday. Not only do they have a drop-in centre they also offer social support groups where they organise a get together for youth members to socialise in a safe environment. These are interconnected because they are designed to help you maintain a positive attitude and are there to help people from all kind of backgrounds. There is a wide range of different sexualities. Your sexual orientation is how you view yourself mentally. These are also interconnected to develop your opinions and values about sexual orientation. Heterosexual is been attracted to a person of the opposite sex. Homosexual is been attracted to a person of the same sex. Bisexual is been attracted to both sexes. Society should be pressuring people into having a curtain sexuality, people and teenagers should be able to feel comfortable about expressing there own identity. To achieve this a starting point would be to use strategies such as Manaki in the wider community to help people understand that everyone has rights and responsibilities. Also ensuring there are councillors available to everyone no mater there background or problem. By attending counselling session and using Manaki it will help you open up and learn to talk to people about your feelings and how embrace who you are. For people who are confused about their sexual orientation the interconnection between these will help them to open up and talk to people who are going through the same struggles as you. You will learn more about yourself and become a lot more comfortable with the idea of who you are. You will be able to start to gain new insight to how common your problems are and that there is help out there for you. You will start to be able to maintain a positive attitude about yourself and others. It is very important that people having a tough time dealing with the harsh reality of society, use the support strategies available to them.

Hi Polly, I’m very sorry to hear your news, however I hope the information/advice I am about to offer you will help you to resolve your issues easier. Your next step would be to get a check up. If you have had intercourse with William there is a chance you should also have Chlamydia, and may need to get treatment. Say in the worst case you do have Chlamydia it’s important you tell your parents and they will hopefully be there to support you. Facing things such as having a STI’s, in yours and Williams case Chlamydia is a very big bump to face in life. That’s why I’d suggest some form of community based support systems in your local area to help you to stay in positive light and to over come this problem. You could start with the school health nurse, they offer advice an will be able to refer you to a family planning nurse. However you may decided to go straight to a family planning nurse in your community. In Orewa I would recommend Family Planning Clinic at The Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre, 214 Hibiscus Highway Orewa. Here they will be able to offer advice on contraception and STI’s, refer you to the doctor for STI tests, have a drop in clinic, no appointment needed. Also keep in mind the councillors your school provides, if you are having a hard time dealing with what is going on I would recommend setting up an appointment. This way you will be able to talk about how you are feeling and coping and they will be able to offer advice and help you through. You can always trust that they will keep things confidential and private. Having Chlamydia will effect your well-being in both positive and negative ways. Your physical well-being will be effected because it’s disease, meaning your health won’t be 100%. Your spiritual well-being will be effected as creating positive goal in the future may become hard for your relationship. Mental and emotional well-being will be effect as if it gets out around your school that William has an STI, you may become bullied and become very upset. Finally your social well being will be effect as your friends may start to tease you in and out of school, this isn’t a very nice experience to go through. I hope the information I have given you will help you and William to sort trough you problems and come out still having a positive relationship. Please feel free to contact me again if you are having further issues.

Hi Agony Aunt
My name is Polly and I am 16. Recently I have started a sexual relationship with my boyfriend William, who is 17.
I know that he has had sex with a couple of girls in the past and I would like him to get checked for STIs to make sure that everything’s safe. Can you let me know what William’s and my rights and responsibilities are?

Thanks
Polly
In your response you should explain the rights and responsibilities of both Polly and William in this situation. Also explain strategies to prevent pregnancy & STI’s.

Hi Polly, thank you very much for your letter. I hope that the following information and advice will help you and William prevent any unwanted problems after having sex. You and William both have rights and responsibilities that come with having a sexual relationship. You have the right to ask William to be checked for STI’s, and William has the responsibility to uphold your right. It is very important to respect that everyone including William have the right to make their own choices. Therefore you can’t make him go for a check up, but considering he decides not to you may want to reconsider your sexual relationship as you don’t want to put your body at risk of catching anything. However I believe that William getting check would be a very good decision. During your sexual relationship you both have the responsibility to look each others body’s, this includes protection to prevent pregnancy and STI’s. There are heaps of ways to reduce the risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection known as a STI. By following these next few simple steps you can dramatically reduce your risk of falling pregnant or catching a STI. Start with communication, been open with William it encourages trust and respect among the two of you. Secondly get tested, which you have already mentioned. Great start! Just make sure he follows through, also if you have been sexually active in the past you should get checked as well just to be safe. Always remember to protect yourself. Condoms work really well in preventing most STIs from being passed on when used consistently. Also another benefit is that when they are used correctly they help reduce the risk of getting you pregnant. In saying this they have disadvantages and advantages like most things, those being, advantages; protects against MOST STI’s, prevents pregnancy, easy to use, small and easy to keep private, don’t cost much. Disadvantages; some people don’t like them or won’t try them, may perish over time if not stored correctly, they can’t prevent the spread of STI’s if they don’t cover the affected area. However if this worries you, you may like to consider taking the pill which will prevent you from getting pregnant, you will need to see your doctor about this. Considering you decide to use condoms here is the correct way to use them. Firstly be sure it has been stored away from heat, check the expiry date. Also check that there are no holes or tears in the packet, and be careful of tearing the condom with sharp fingernails. Finally squeeze the air out of the tip of the condom before rolling it on. Hopefully this information I have provided will help you and William to have a safe sexual relationship with each other. Just remember safe sex isn’t always using condoms it’s also communicating with your partner, checking for STI’s, trusting yourself and your partner, saying yes and no when you want to and respecting each other’s rights and responsibilities. I hope you and William are able to make the right choices. If you need anything else feel free to send another letter.
All the best Agony Aunt
